A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I kept waiting for someone to point this out! The revelation of Loki's heritage isn't just the cherry on the "But you like Thor more than meeeeee!" Daddy Issue sundae. It completely destroys his sense of self, which is enormously painful and damaging even if that self was kind of an insecure little shit.

I mean, it's clear from canon that Loki and Thor were raised to think of the Jotun as literal monsters, worthy of little more than being slaughtered for Asgardian amusement. Even if Odin didn't overtly encourage that attitude in their youth, he clearly didn't do much to dissuade it. Both that and Odin's willingness to let Loki think himself/be treated as the lesser son take on a pretty weird and sinister vibe in hindsight. And while Avengers!Loki is mostly out to stick it to Thor (and get away from Thanos), Thor!Loki is, I think, essentially driven mad with grief and rage and can only think to prove himself Odin's true son by surpassing even Thor's feats of war and vengeance. I mean - yeeeeah. Suffice it to say I don't think people are comprehending how disturbing Loki's storyline in Thor actually is.

Which doesn't mean one has to like him or find his behavior sympathetic, but to say that people who find his character interesting are just woobifying some jerk with Daddy Issues seems to miss the entire arc of his character.

nayrt

I call bullshit on this line of reasoning. You do know that you have absolutely no control on people's thoughts and emotions, right? You can't "let" someone think of themselves in any way. At the end of the day they are going to think of themselves whichever way they want. And it seems pretty clear that Loki was dead-set on making himself the victim in his own narrative, no matter what anyone else around him says or does.

It's also obvious that Loki is very good at hiding his emotions, so I think there is the distinct possibility that Odin didn't even know how little Loki thought of himself. When Loki freaks out at Odin over the frost giant thing, Odin is clearly upset at Loki's accusations, is incredulous that Loki would twist Odin's words is such a way, that Loki would prefer to think the worst of Odin.

Also regarding the frost giants, while the Jotun were enemies of the Asgardians (at one point), it seems pretty clear that Odin at least didn't propagate the idea that they were horrible monsters with no redeeming qualities who should die ASAP (probably because, you know, Loki WAS a Jotun). He treats with them fairly, he reminds child!Thor that going to war for no reason is a BAD thing, and basically tries as hard as he can to not go to war with the Jotun. While some Asgardians might have seen them as evil monsters (cause, well, they did attack Earth for the Evulz, I guess), it seems pretty obvious that Odin did not see them in that way. We never see Odin talking about the Jotun like they are monsters, just that they were some people he fought, once. When Thor goes all, "WE MUST HAVE THEIR BLOOD!" Odin calls him out on his stupidity. Hell, part of Loki's tragedy is that he thinks that killing the frost giants will impress Odin, when it's so pathetically obvious what a terrible idea that is and how it's not going to work at all (but of course Loki doesn't pay attention because he only believes what he wants to believe...and we're back to that big flaw, again).

So, basically, what more would you have Odin do? He can't control what the Asgardians think, but he can at least control his own actions towards his sons and he does. He can't control what Loki thinks of himself, but he did let Loki know that Odin considered Loki his son, and constantly treated him like a son (hell, Loki even gets to be king for a while, despite the fact that he's not even an Asgardian). Odin isn't a perfect father, but acting like he's a monster because of things that are completely out of his control (you really can't control what people think) is just hilariously stupid.
