I'm still on season 2, so I'm a little behind, but what I've understood from news regarding them, it was never a question of whether it was canon (Bubblegum and Marceline share a past) but whether they will end up together. There was even an "unofficial" voting that allowed viewers to call in and vote whether the two would become a couple or not. Also some of the people working on the show have been more than happy to push them together. Then the execs were like, no of course they're not lesbians, which we all know is a bunch of BS.

So the way I'm seeing it, if Bubblegum and Jake aren't endgame it's gonna be Bubblegum/Marceline all the way.

Oh, that's what I heard too. I was hoping that they had finally given it and said, "Eff it, okay, it is canon! Canon gay couple in Cartoon Network children's show! Are you happy now?!" And then everyone would be all like, "Heck, yes! <3333"

That's... not quite how it went.

Oy, okay... not trying to reignite this shitstorm, but here's the story, from somebody who watched it unfold...

Now, I assume you know the episode in question If not, I'll not spoil it, it'll be obvious which one it is when you see it.

After the episode, the Mathematical youtube channel put up the video which asked what people thought, if Marcelene and Bubblegum would get together, and where it'd leave Finn if so.

Mathematical was independently operated by somebody on Frederator who was not directly involved with AT staff.

The video went down fast OL, and so in fact did the AT episode itself, which set everybody ablaze. According to CN, that was a completely coincidental tech burp. I suppose we'll never know if that's true or not, but the episode was up again the next day with no edits. The mathematical video was not, and the guy was dismissed by Fred himself, stating it was inappropriate to imply canon. (Fred, to his credit, said it was his call and all anger at this should be directed at himself rather then making any attempt at diffusion of responsibility. He also claims he did this all before even talking to anybody from CN)

Adam Muto helped fuel it by noting he wasn't happy about the video, namely since he was involved in creating the episode and didn't appreciate a video coming from the studio offices (and that's why you yourself put unofficial it in quotes) guessing as to motivations. He said that fan speculation and shipping in and of itself were fine by him, but not something like this. A lot of people thought that sounded weak and got mad at him too.

So there was never a formal backtrack, because technically nobody from AT actually said anything about that pairing, other then make the episode itself, which was even re-shown this week.

As to people on the show, creative designer Natasha Allergi has done some art. But drawing girls is kinda one of Nat's things, so how much we can take this as canon is dubious at best.

My details were a bit fuzzy so thanks. I'm still on season two and haven't seen the episode yet, but I know the episode in question, so my info is a little limited.
