Rarely do we see someone who is gay or someone who has darker skin as a main lead of a mainstream show. Let alone a mainstream show that's in a sci-fi or fantasy genre. Sure, it happens, but it's a lot rarer than the typical straight white male main lead that is in SO MANY action movies, fantasy novels, etc.
