Wow. I'm pretty sure I didn't write this but I'm really, really interested in what other people have to say. Not alone OP!

Starting isn't hard! :) You set up a blog the usual way and make a presentation post IC or something - check how some of your favourites started up in their Archives. Show your art, that's great!
Then, a single post on the fandom/character tag should be fair advertisement for your blog. Add relevant RP blogs if you feel like it. Tag the relevant stuff.

...fake-anoning yourself a couple of asks might be a way to start too. u_u

(disclaimer: I'm running a Ghost Trick RP blog, not an ask blog per se, but I'm following some of those both with my character and on my personal. And with how Tumblr RP works, the line is sometimes blurred)

(gratuituous spam time: askghosttrick and askaceattorney are AMAZING. I get running a single character blog competently, but a whole cast? Whoa. My hat's off to both mods!)

You can also look for other ask blogs in your fandom and ask them to advertise/askthem something to draw attention to yourself!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-13 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I've never fake-anoned ones to myself, but my RP partner and I send each other loads of questions all the time, so it's nothing to be ashamed of :) As long as you're creating content people will like, they'll follow you, no matter where it came from.

At least give it a try :) Ask blogs are some of my favorite parts of tumblr!

What is an ask blog?
laughingpineapple: (Default)

[personal profile] laughingpineapple 2012-06-12 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It's simply an IC blog where people send letters to the character(s) and the character(s) answer(s). Like this one!

Why not try? The worst that could happen is no one follows or asks you anything, and you won't have lost anything but a bit of time and effort. If it doesn't attract people or you don't enjoy it, you can always quit.

Do it, anon! I love those blogs! :)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-12 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I know that feel.

I don't have the art skills to pull it off, and I still draw too slowly to update it as often as it needs to be updated to stay popular.

But you do, OP.

So go for it!

Probably the best thing you could do would be to get some friends or rp partners to help get it going. Nearly anything with original content will attract attention from the right people. Tags also help.

As for art... just get a second opinion from people?

Which Ask Blog were you thinking of running, OP?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-13 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Submit a picture on your deviantart and mention that you're opening an Ask Blog and tell people to go ask!

Or mention your ask blog in your next fic.

Or just make a pimping entry on an lj or dw comm related to the series / character.

Make sure you tag your posts with the character / series / etc.

I just submitted a picture on my dA advertising it and made a pimping post on an lj comm, and got spammed with 40 asks... so lol.

I help run one, it's a lot of fun. If it's for a popular character/ship/group of characters/etc, it can kind of eat up your time, so keep that in mind.

You might get some nitpicky followers, but they're generally a minority, most people are just excited about interacting with characters they love.

As for getting exposure... Making an IC introduction post tagged with the character and fandom will usually work well enough, but if that doesn't drum up much interest, you can go fake-anon and send yourself a question or two to get the ball rolling, or look for other ask blogs in the same fandom and ask if they'd be willing to plug yours.

Best of luck!

Just make sure to advertise it and you should do fine. I made one for a fanon character -- Fabricator!1, if you're familiar with 9 canon -- and I've got more questions than I know what to do with! People will come if you get the word out.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-13 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
It's not too hard to start! I made one myself. It's a small blog for a tiny fandom, so I've had dry spells when it comes to asks, but I've still had a lot of fun with it. If you've got friends interested in whatever series or so on you're blogging for, that's already a few followers sending in asks, and who knows how many people might find it via tags or reblogs! If it doesn't work out, no harm done.

Hope you give it a shot, and good luck! =D

Make sure to abuse all relevant tags to make finding you super easy, especially during times when your fandom is active (if possible). If you already have followers on any other blog, dA, or other places you frequent, make to sure to advertise and reblog yourself.

You can start out with fake questions, or have your character musing to themselves, but it's generally a good idea to indicate you can and will produce content.

Good luck if you try it out, OP!

Just do eet! :D There really is very little (if any) risk factor and you've got nothing to lose. If it works out, great! If it doesn't, no big deal.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-13 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding the chorus of "dooo iiiit"s. I was terrified to make an RP blog on tumblr, but I finally decided to take the plunge and I really love it. It helps to be a social person and unabashedly promote yourself, especially if you're running an ask blog (mine's also an RP blog so my self-promotion is more about going and chatting with characters I want to interact with, but there are a host of other ways for an ask blog to promote itself, from IC posts and tag abuse to promos and even branching into chat-RPing a little bit).
But yeah. You can pretty much do what you feel comfortable with, and if you ignore jerky anons (if you get any), it really is just pure fun.

[personal profile] skinst_bomb 2012-06-13 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
I started one and don't regret it one bit. :D It is SO much fun.

Do it, anon! It's fun (if tiring...)! People come up with the awesomest questions.

I never used Tumblr before, and WOW is it a bizarre way of blogging, but you get used to it (mostly?) Get a ask___ tumblr name, make an intro post so people can see your art, tag it with the relevant character name/fandom, and await asks!

[personal profile] ex_euthanasia834 2012-06-13 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I was wondering the same for some time, then last night I just made one. Fuck it, I thought, the worst thing that can happen is that no-one will respond and I'll abandon/delete the blog. Woke up to 2-3 questions in my inbox, so it's a start :)

The most important thing on Tumblr is tags. Tag your post with most popular tags in your fandom, but keep in mind that only the FIRST FIVE TAGS will show in Tumblr search. So, 5 popular tags first, 'personal' tags later.

It also helps to do a small intro drawing. Maybe the character holding an "ask me anything!" sign or something similar.

I started a pairing-ask a few months ago for a somewhat rare-pair (compaired to the other pairings with these characters) mostly just to get a giggle out of it and maybe answer a question or two by a friend, but now it's working better than I ever expected. Of course, I'm not one of those with 1000+ watchers who has to close the askbox frequently, but it's still fun!
So my advice (read: this is how I did it) would be:

- Just go for it. If you never start, you'll never know!
- Make the first post a "askbox is open" thing. Do it in a manner that is representative of how you're going to answer the questions in the future, to give an idea how your posts are going to look like. Then TAG IT! USE THE TAGS! ALL THE TAGS!!! people who are interested in a certain thing track those, and will stumble over your blog easier this way.
- Just do your thing. Answer the questions you get in a fun and consistent manner. Try to come up with a good/non-ordinairy answer for every question. Having a mug-shot of a character going "yes" "no" "maybe" post after post isn't very fun.
- Don't expect lots of notes/questions right from the start. Or at all. I'm still happy when an ask of mine gets more than 10 notes haha.
- HAVE FUN YOURSELF! Be aware that you're going to draw the same character(s) over and over and over and OVER again.

but mostly:

just do it! Who knows, you could have lots of fun with it

=D
