To be honest, I think that it was a really bad move to have such a complicated love situation before the team even becomes proper friends. :(

This. The show could have done with a lot less (canon) shipping, especially for such a short season.

That, and it came out of nowhere. It was literally just "oh hey, Korra likes Mako!" and I just sat there scratching my head. I only really recall her staring at him once. Other than that, Korra had just called him a jerk and seemed more annoyed at him than anything else.

I get that Korra may have fallen in love with the first cool-non-lotus-dude she met (her being stuck in a compound most of her life), but it should have been kept more in the background, kinda like Aang's affections for Katara. It's there, it's part of the plot, but it's not the main plot. and the romance in this show has been the main plot for at least two episodes. Lin and Tenzin have a better dynamic then the rest of the Krew. I get why they did it, but it seems like a bad move for a show with such heavy themes (like terrorism and elite class separations, and triads and poverty).
