I was struggling with what to say to this secret and then this comment appeared. This is a beautiful story anon! It gives me a bit of hope that maybe the OP's friend would be more welcoming or at ease with their feelings than they think. Even if things don't go as well as with your story, they might get lucky and be pretty chill with it. Maybe the OP and his friend could carry on the same as they have been, but with that huge weight off the OP's shoulders?

Thanks. ^^ Things aren't perfect - we're not wholly out, by her choice, as we're from a small village and she doesn't want to be the subject of gossip - but I'm just so lucky.

I think one of the things that people might tell you, OP, is that a good friend will already have an inkling. My girlfriend was entirely oblivious. But even if it's terrifying - I felt as though I'd stepped off a cliff and started falling out of my body while I could hear all those personal things blithely coming out of my mouth above me - any person worthy of your love will surely not take such a noble sentiment in the wrong spirit. In fact, at the time, my friend admitted it was the ego boost she'd been needing, bless her. Unless you've got your friend very wrong, there's very little lasting damage that could be made by gently letting that person know you're interested.

Things are rarely perfect IRL, but to be with the person you love is a wonderful thing indeed so I agree - you are very lucky!

(And I too think if they care about you that much, they won't react too badly; a good friend will consider your feelings and even if they can't return them, be nice about it.)
