I just recently was given a violin by a friend because she was going to just trash it and I can't stand to think of perfectly good instruments being thrown away, and even though I've never played before, I've been teaching myself the basics. I've been using Sherlock as my inner coach too, and it helps immensely when I'm feeling down about slow progress--which is weird because he's not kind about it by any means. XD Maybe I just need someone that snarky to whip my butt into shape. In any case, I'm glad I'm not the only one, and I'm glad it's working for you!

Or donated it to a school or a kids' music program or a charity thrift store... Even a relatively crappy instrument would still be appreciated by someone.

Although, Anon, I'm glad you have it now and are teaching yourself to play it. Whenever I think it would be fun to learn a particular instrument, the fantasy completely derails when I find out how expensive the instrument actually is.
