Those sites are popular because those sides of fandom take so little time (and sometimes effort). They're like "fandom express".

It's so frustrating though if you want to comment or have a question! It's also more difficult to get a feel for the fandom or make contacts.

I agree completely. I only go to tumblr from time to time to hunt down pretty pictures. Anything more is just to headache inducing.

I wasn't aware that there were minimal time and effort requirements. Personally, I don't have the time to get through the primary works of my fandoms, much less sift through piles of dreary fanfic or analysis wank.
