In their defense, Sokka only started becoming majorly badass around season 2. He was kind of just the joke guy at the beginning. It may be that Bryke are just better at writing longer arcs, and not so good with the episode crunch they're currently dealing with...

Yeah, but at least Katara and Aang properly interacted with him. Episode 2 and episode 5 are the only episodes where Bolin and Korra really talked to each other mutually. All the other times Bolin tried to talk to her was one-sided, either with Korra being distracted or not seeming really interested.

Now that's just sad.

Agreed on that. In general, I felt that the Gaang had just... much stronger communication than the new Team Korra. Heck, there was even bonding time with Zuko in the first season!
But LoK is a lot more intense in terms of the action, the plot is moving very quickly. Though that shouldn't excuse poor character development.

Yeah, especially when they spent so much time on romantic development.

I liked Katara and Aang's relationship because they felt like good friends even without romantic feelings, plus they had a great relationship with everyone else.
With Korra, it still feels like they're just becoming friends and the romance is hindering that development.

Well, rewatching the first season it's pretty clear that Aang had a crush on Katara. But it all felt very casual, and you felt that there was a lot of friendship there besides the crush.

Actually, for that reason I actually sort of liked some elements of the much-derided love triangle episode. The love triangle itself I could have done with less of, but I really liked the bonding at the end between Korra and Bolin. On one hand, I guess I can buy it from a "well they're teenagers..." perspective. At the same time, though, I kind of wish they would be a bit more subtle about it, and just let it go more slowly.

Augh

okay look

Mike and Bryan DID NOT WRITE A:TLA THEMSELVES.

They're not "better at writing longer arcs."

They're BAD AT WRITING.

A:TLA was good because it had an amazing head writer (Aaron Ehasz) and a whole team of staff writers, all of whom wrote episodes themselves AND rewrote the Mike & Bryan episodes to be not... shitty.

TLOK sucks because Mike and Bryan are bad writers, and they wrote the whole thing themselves. Their weaknesses are writ large across the arc of the show.

he started getting away from his comic relief stint at least by mid-season one. definitely at least by the time we met bato and the fortuneteller.
