I agree :(
I recently started a tumblr, but it just feels so... flat. It's like I can't really figure out who people are, or how to talk to them...
And everything goes by so fast. People are just zapping pictures back and forth, and I feel like I can't engage emotionally.

It might be easier once you follow people for a while? People often tend to make text posts about their lives every now and then. I think over a long time you can feel less disconnected. I use tumblr pretty frequently, and I can engage emotionally now and then, but mostly it's like an instant gratification blast of your interests. It can be good, if you're not in the mood for anything deep or you just want to be amused by something, but the problem is that it can be really quite addictive. And then it becomes your primary fandom experience. A lot of people there are probably okay with that! But I wish it wasn't taking over as the main fandom location. It doesn't really seem right. Its whole setup sort of rejects discussion.

I blame the youths, with their short attention spans and all. Young whippersnappers!

I think it's hard for me to stick with it because, like you said, it rejects discussion. I LIKE thinking about fandom - but even the few times I've responded to more thoughtful posts in kind, the conversation often just stops there.
Heck, even facebook is a better format for fandom...
