I blame the shortness of the season and how they had to develop the friendships very quickly. In A:TLA they had more time develop, but here, not so much - made worse by the fact slightly older characters aren't so quick to bond as the younger A:TLA cast, particularly with the kind of emotional baggage most of them are carrying.

They had 9 episodes. That's enough time to at least give them a sense of camaraderie. I blame shitty writing tbh.

Pretty much. Tenzin and Korra have a great relationship IMO and I love it. Granted they DO live together and he's her mentor, I think Tenzin has the mentor/Avatar relationship ALL Avatars are supposed to have with all their mentors- which Korra probably never had with her Earth or Fire bending mentors since it came so easily to her and instead of her living with them they went to the South Pole to her on top of the stress of Amon and all.

Though honestly it means Tenzin carrying Korra (maybe freaking out?) rather than Mako makes much more sense then. He's like her father figure now she's far away from home.

OMG YES. There can never be enough quasi father/daughter relationship/Tenzin freak out face happening on this show :DDD
