Real talk.

Looking at you Americans.

Is there a term more likely to make me roll my eyes at you then 'mutt'? You are white american d/w/t

"american" is a nationality, people with say german-jewish ancestry still have every right to call themselves german-jewish because that is actually in their blood

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree. How is a country in your blood? Certain ethnicity related genetic traits might be, like skin colour for instance, but countries are man made divisions of land that shift and change over time; culture, language, etc - it's all made up by the people actually there at a given moment in time. If you aren't/weren't there yourself you are *not* German-Jewish, you are American of German-Jewish descent.

god how many times am i going to have to explain to you guys that labels like "german" are ethnic labels just as much as their are labels on nationality

and ethnicity is biological just as much as it is social

you honestly have no right to tell somebody they can't be jewish or irish because of their locational status

Yeah, this doesn't make any sense to me, like. My mother and her entire family is German and my father and his entire family is from somewhere in Africa (no idea where, I never asked). I CLEARLY look mixed and I identify as being half of each. Does that mean I have no right to call myself that and am just Canadian now because that's where I was born?

I also identify with 3 cultures (my mom's, my dad's, and the one I was born into). Almost every other person I meet in the same situation quite openly identifies as multi-cultural or multi-ethnic (mind you I'm in Europe where these things are seen a bit differently).

As I said elsewhere, I would think it's a bit weird if you identified with the nationality of a distant ancestor from the 1700's, but I think if it's your (grand)parents it's pretty normal you want to include that into your own identification.

The interesting thing is that in many ways there are little cultural differences between me and people whose family is also from here. Little things like: they have their own regional dialect (while mine is generic) or basically the TV shows/music they grew up with because it was shared by their parents (etc).

This is kind of making me lol because you're both saying the same thing, but in different ways.

Person above is saying, "Just because you're American doesn't mean you exclusively have to identify as American if you were born there/currently live there. You can identify as 'insert nationality/ethnicity here' even though you yourself were not born in that particular country."

You are saying, "I identify as German/African even though I am Canadian, because even though I was born in Canada, my parents' families came from these places."

YOU'RE BOTH RIGHT YAAAAY

We weren't disagreeing.. I agree with her comment.

[personal profile] khronos_keeper 2012-06-15 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
My bad! Sorry.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
That is what German-Jewish means in that culture. You people arguing this is really stupid: it's an established way of saying "of X heritage". It's not caused by Hetalia but is rather a perfectly accepted and common term. For example, I am often asked by Americans whether I am "Italian" because of my surname. They absolutely do not mean, "are you an Italian citizen?" when they say this.

Also, good luck saying someone's not Jewish just because they have US citizenship.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I will absolutely hold my hands up that Jewish was a bad example, I was replying to the previous comment and didn't think. My fault.

Maybe it is a common term. However it is not the way I would use the terms and I think it's not unreasonable for people to say what they mean rather than assume their implied modifer is being picked up on.

Agree with all of this.

German is just as much a nationality.

I get American exceptionalism, and you;re just so speacial and unique, but genetic shift, ethnicity, etc don't work that way. You genuinely don't understand what you're talking about, so unless you're willing to produce some references about the unique nature of american genetic lineage compared to every other country out there drop this point.

lmao no YOU don't know what you're talking about, but maybe if you read the whole thread you wouldn't be forcing me to repeat myself

i never stated "german" wasn't a nationality, it was clear through my language that i understood this. but "german" is also an ethnicity, whereas "american" is not

hopefully that answers your stupid-ass implication LMAO

i also stated a few times that i'm australian, so your attempts to insult ~americans and their exceptionalism has no basis whatsoever. if you're going to be a buttenraged anti-american cunt then fine but don't try to justify that with illogical foundations
