I know it's not precisely addressing the secret, but as far as definitions of nationalism go, you don't really need a country to 'exist' in the same way that the US or Japan dies to be a citizen of it. I can give longer definitions later (see: Benedict Anderson, imagined political community etc.) but some quick examples- Palestine, Taiwan, Timor Leste pre independence, and to some small extent, the former USSR. Political lines and boundaries shift over time, but don't necessarily change people's own identities when they do.

Lawl I too am getting my masters' degree in the human and social sciences, I have read Benedict Anderson, I know what you mean.

I just don't see how that applies to someone who wasn't born there, nor were their parents born there, nor were they raised to identify with the cultural or historical trappings of the nation in question.

Post-WWII citizens of what was formerly Prussia, displaced or otherwise, and their children? Absolutely.

American kid who first learned about Prussia from a children's cartoon show, has never been there, and knows nothing about the culture or history save what they read on Wikipedia, whether they have Prussian ancestry or not? I don't think that applies.

Sure, I'll agree with you that OPs friend might be a little stranger in this regard, but that's not what you asked in your original comment. Unless you meant to be hyperbolic about things, but it's not possible to tell that from what you said.

I thought the context of the secret would make the context of my comment obvious, but you're right, of course.

This. I'm First Nations, and I have friends and relatives who identify as citizens of Turtle Island (i.e. of the North America that existed prior to the European conquering). Which isn't my own view, but I respect it and understand where it's coming from. But I've also seen First Nations fetishists from Germany profess that they consider themselves spiritual citizens of Turtle Island. Which gets nothing from me but an eye-roll and fierce desire to slap someone upside the head.

I just witnessed a white girl on tumblr who claims to be a "transethnic" Korean last night, so I feel your pain.

First Nation fetishists... spiritual citizens of Turtle Island

recoiling in fright

AYRT - I didn't even know this was a thing until I joined a university department that attracted Europeans studying FN languages, but there was a very popular westerns author in Germany called Karl May, and many of his fans "cosplay" as Indians and even put together Ren-Faire camps where they go to play Indian for a weekend. Some of the people who were into it enough to make it an academic career and come to North America were...off-putting to say the least.

as a Taiwanese reading this makes me sad to read :(

(Anonymous) 2012-06-14 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
ignore the awkward wording, I typed half of that, forgot I typed the first half, and finished the sentence starting from the middle.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-14 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, but could you elaborate on why? It's pretty relevant to my interests.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-14 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
we have our own government and our own laws, and we're working on International diplomatic deals with different countries. but the Chinese government thinks we're part of them, so they prevent us from joining International groups and activities. we have to enter the Olympics under the title 'Chinese Taipei' because Taiwan doesn't exist as a country. we couldn't join the World Health Organization when there was a worldwide (Asian-wide?) disease going on, so we didn't receive any notice or help when the disease struck. during our presidential election, China basically said they're willing to help and pay for abroad merchants to come back to Taiwan, so long as they vote for the candidate China approves of and said candidate gets elected successfully, threatening to boycott our economy if he isn't.

China wants us to be like Hong Kong, aka part of China and under their control, but with their own government and laws. and maybe that's the future for us, maybe now that China's growing stronger it won't be that bad to be part of China, I don't know. but right now I see ourselves as a country struggling to exist, and the way the comment I replied to worded it, it's almost like we're disappearing already.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, nah, that's not what I meant at all. I apologise for that mistake, I didn't mean to say 'countries that didn't exist that people think they belong to' as much as 'countries whose existence can be called into question depending on which side you're looking on', that's why I threw Timor Leste (pre-independence) and Palestine in as well.

I'm aware of the situation and that does sort of match up to what I was thinking. My aim was to sort of state that- a lot of other countries (thank you, China) and several international organisations wouldn't recognise or give Taiwan country status- but even so, people could still consider themselves citizens of it as a country and so on.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I know you (that was your comment, right?) didn't mean that we didn't exist given the other countries listed. it's just that I'm personally more on the side that we are a country, and it's sad to think that others might not agree. it's just my irrational feelings, really xD

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who feels the same way, please don't say it's irrational. It legitimately feels like this shadow that hangs over almost anything. You get this worry and ache in the pit of your stomach because you don't know what is going to happen to your country or who you can rely on. Or if really, bullies can swallow you up just by virtue of being big and important enough.

Not to mention the missiles and threats pointed in our direction...
crowsong: Gin smirking. (like ribbons in your hair;)

I'm sorry. ;^;

But, Taiwan exists in the hearts of its people! Regardless of what China or any other country wants... I hope Taiwan is recognized, someday!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-14 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I was literally just about to post about Benedict Anderson when I saw your comment! Great minds think alike! ;)

I'm taking Anthropology of Media right now and just wrote a paper on how media affects/forms national identity and used a bit of Anderson. The point of the paper was to refute Marshall McLuhan's "The Medium is the Message", which I will do gladly any day of the week.

Yay anthropology/sociology/similar majors! (So much overlap!)
