I don't read this secret as complaining about Mary's story exactly. More about the other characters all revolving around it. If that's what OP means, then I tend to agree. I liked Mary and Matthew's story. But I thought the fact that Fellowes had everyone and their aunt (literally) chip in about how much they shipped M/M was obnoxious, and ran the risk of making the shows main pairing look like idiots. (Because it's that little bit harder to believe in the legitimate obstacles to their romance when nobody in-universe will shut the fuck up about how end-game they are. That's not how it's done, Fellowes!)

I don't think that EVERYTHING revolved around Mary and Matthew's story, but yeah. They did take up a large chunk and fandom seems to be the most interested in them, so looking at fandom they also get most of the attention which I think is part of the problem.

The Daily Mail probably doesn't help either.

I think they tend to stan pretty hard for Mary and Matthew? But being the Fail, they are also only really interest in the upstairs lot, and endow their reporting with their particular nasty spirit of conservativism. And I think maybe Mary gets splash-back from that?

When Mary is unapologetically of her class that's interesting. When reporters, fandom, and even Fellowes himself are apologists for the class system, it's gross.

I'm getting wildly off the OP's topic here. But I think the more Mary and Matthew get treated as the main protaganists the more risk their is of slippage between enjoying Mary as a woman of her time and bristling at her being a focal point for lamentations for the good old days. (When the working class contentedly knew their place, maids enjoyed sexual-harrassment and didn't cause a fuss, we could laugh at the foolish Irish, all the 'right' people didn't have to so much as fasten their own buttons, and coercive rape was a sexy peccadillo.)

Oh man. That really is madly off-topic, isn't it? Sorry.
