If nobody in their family ever set foot in a given country than it's pretty weird to say you belong to it. But otherwise I think there might be some cultural dissonance between OP and people from the U.S.

Even for people who have never heard of Hetalia, it's very common here to say "I'm German" if your ancestors way way back were from Germany. In a country almost entirely formed through immigration, it's normal to be curious about where you or your friends' families came from. I don't personally see the harm in it (or in wanting to learn more about your ancestry after watching something like Hetalia), but then again, I was raised here. I'm not sure whether or not this phenomenon exists in other countries, too.

And it's possible I'm not even talking about the same thing OP is, so there's that.
