And most of the rest of the world feels sad for you being so obsessed with this outdated, backwards concept.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Not obsessed, I just think that if everyone can say they're proud of being *insert nationality here* and most of the countries did something horrible at one point in history, Germans shouldn't feel wary of saying it.

Personally I'm not proud of being from my country and the concept is strange to me, but if someone wants to say it, why the hell not. I usually assume they mean liking their culture and being proud of good things anyway, maybe it's naive of me?

I think there is a difference between people from former East-Germany and former West-Germany as well in that regard.

Possibly because in most European countries this burns down to nationalism? I'm not a "proud" Polish person, I just am Polish and I do identify with our culture and history but I'm very critical about it. If in Scotland you would say you're a proud Scot you'll be labeled as a separationist. In Germany there's a whole neo-Nazi movement on the rise.

This. In some countries saying you're "nationalist" basically is saying "I vote for far right political parties".

I think sometimes it goes a bit too far. People cheering for the German team and hanging flags from their balconies during EURO 2012 shouldn't mean we have to have a debate about nationalism. There are a bunch of other things that should be discussed under that label but not people getting together under a flag.

But it really is weird. I think it started with the 06 Wordlcup in Germany, before that no one dared to go all flag waving. And it was honestly the first time I looked at German flags without a vague disdain.

It does go too far and both ways - there's internal and external nationalism. Far to many Polish people fell free to spout bigoted shite against Germans, Russians and Jews (anti-semitism is always trendy!). Being "proud" of your roots shouldn't hold this many connotations and most people nowadays are aware and critical of their country's war crimes. I am proud of Polish sports history and other people are proud of German and this should unite people in their ... proudness? This doesn't mean that either me or others are ignorant of their country's mistakes.

Yep. Western Europe isn't really big on national pride. Oh, they like their country, but they don't shout it out loud and have flags everywhere. Those who do often have a lot of nasty nationalist and xenophobic baggage to go with it.
