I vaguely remember a huge wank here when someone submitted a secret about "cutiefying" their history (Lithuanian OP I think?) and trivialising their hardships or comparing them to sexual abuse. Wham, all those defenders appear, because hey, when talking about a nation it's not like you're talking about its citizens, right :D?

Hetalia is honestly a complicated matter for me. I'm not really quick to get angry, but I get a lot of second-hand embarrassement from people who write about Poland (Hetalia character) using some darker parts of history if they're doing it wrong -- whether it's positive towards him and the country or not. And at the same time it doesn't happen always! I saw some fanfiction written by Americans that I found pretty awesome. So I guess it can be done right, even if you're not from the country you're writing about.

I also don't mind treating history with humour and jokes. Just like there can be good comedies about WWII, I believe there can be light, good fanfiction.

The only problem is, it's complicated and you (general you) have to know what you're doing. Hetalia is cute. Hetalia is funny. You can still create fanwork that is both, to me. But just, use your head while doing it.

I'm a history nerd and I love me some political/cultural satire :), so I do understand. Hetalia is too slapstick for me, but each to their own. Someone once linked me to a good fic about each country talking about their composers, I wish I have saved it. I believe it was written by someone from US.

Hetalia is not the sole offender here, this been going on for ages with many many many fandoms focusing on a nation and fans not doing their research.

Yeah, I mean... I saw a fic from fandom completely unrelated to Polish history. It was AU, set in Poland in 1939 (usually recipe for disaster). AND IT WAS. A disaster. And it got only positive reviews while I couldn't enjoy the story at all seeing as everything was so historically horrible there. Author used sources. Read some history. Even linked to it. But... it's just not enough to write about a period in depth, with eyes of someone who supposedly lived there and then.

I wish you have saved it too :(

Not even gonna lie, one of the reasons I like Hetalia is that I can take something stupid or potentially embarrassing that politicians did and think about it in Hetalia terms. Which is not very deep, but surprisingly relaxing sometimes. It's a little like thinking about the world as a big playground where everyone is as immature as it's humanly possible.

See this is why my stress levels are usually high :P, I'm all over politics and take them VERY seriously. I wish I could see it your way, sometimes things get so abstract that you don't even know what to think about it.

I wish you saved your link as well :(, I like reading bad fiction, it cheers me up and validates me as a self-proclaimed write .

Oh, well then. I can see how that can be a problem.

I don't save bad things because I'd inevitably go back to them and loose heart all over again. (Unless it's hilariously bad, but sadly, that one wasn't.)

My family doesn't know how I can still handle politics, they hide from it :P .

I do that as well, the worst offenders are well-writen fic with horrid plots :( .
