Damn I hate that. "Where are you from?" Here. "No, but where are you really from?" Here. "I mean where are you from from? Originally?" I am from here damn it, we were born in the same fucking hospital about a month apart.

...Why can't they just ask, "Oh, and where are your parents/grandparents/ancestors from?"

(Or would that be considered rude?)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Could, but you know it just means the same thing, "But your kind of people aren't from here!"

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. :( I would ask (if I asked) out of genuine curiosity and wanting to get to know the other person better, not to make them feel excluded, or something.

lol, I don't mind at all if it's someone trying to get to know you, but you can pretty easily tell the difference between that and the people who just can't let it rest & insist you must find somewhere else to be from, even after you tell them that your great-grandparents came from something like six different countries (which are hard to count due to redrawn borders, no longer existing, etc.) and while this has had the result that you look different from the local 'norm' there is really no other place you can name as where you're from except the place you and your parents were born and grew up in...

It baffles me to know that there are persons feeling so intimidated by the idea of people settling down in different places than where they were born and having descendants for generations.

People moving from one region to another is nothing new. It's been happening for thousands of years.

Did they never pay attention in History class, or...? Or the news? Or anything that reveals how stuff has been going down around the world? v°v??

I think there's nothing wrong with that (personally), I just think that most people do phrase it as "Where are YOU from" which is a bit weird if you both grew up in the same city.

Along the same lines: "you speak our language really well."

I feel weird when people ask me where I'm from like that. I've lived in the same area my whole life. There was a question like this in a paper in college and wrote about being Appalachian and how my parents are grandparents are Appalachian, but apparently that's not what the teacher wanted and I wasn't digging deep enough.

Personally I find the "where are you REALLY from" question hilarious. Sometimes I'm even tempted to come up with some insane story about my family history just to see after how much bs people would stop believing it.

I daresay you'd get disappointed by how much they can buy if you tried that.

It is funny, though! It's like they're clinging stubbornly to the idea that people never move around the world, and that they never settle down and have children somewhere different than where they were born.

It's only been happening since, you know, humans could gather together and walk.
