(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 01:25 am (UTC)(link)Problem is 'keeping someone in their place' is an excuse that's often used to rip into someone because of things they didn't have anything to do with/things they couldn't control/personal feelings, and not just in fictional worlds. I've had someone actually do that to me, and actually use the reasoning of 'It's my duty to keep [people who are from where you were born] in your place!' It's a sucky feeling, even more so when people take it as a sign to join in. Which, iirc, Rob did do somethings that were very similar to that to Jon [at least in the TV show]. I can't help but that, if he didn't pick that up from his mother, she probably didn't help the issue.
I'm not saying she should have been happy about Jon, or that she should have loved him like a parent - but 'putting someone in their place' is a very *bad* 'coping mechanism', and it's one that I can't respect her character at all for since it seems like she's been doing it since Jon was a child.

Ned won't talk to her about it. That puts her in a very, very bad position.
