And the other thing is that Catelyn has literally NO power in that situation. She can't tell Ned to send Jon somewhere else to be raised. The only thing that she can control is her feelings and her reaction to the situation. So she chooses not to embrace Jon as a son because is basically the only thing she CAN do to voice her displeasure.

It's not a good thing, but idk. Like in the context of her story and in the context of the society, I think it makes her a more interesting character than she would have been if she raised Jon as a son.

Actually, I think Cat could have done a lot more to make Jon unwelcome, but she didn't, she just chose to ignore him. She could have kept her own children from interacting with him, she could have verbally abused him, etc.

It's funny (wait, I mean annoying) that fandom crucifies her for being so cruel to Jon but Jon himself doesn't think Cat's behavior was egregious. In terms of Westerosi society, she behaved pretty much as she was expected to behave. It's not good by modern standards, but I wouldn't want to read about Saint Cat, Westeros' greatest stepmother either.

This. There's no real evidence that Cat was awful to Jon all the time. She just said something really terrible to him in a moment of stress/sleeplessness/emotional turmoil/etc. While it's obvious she resents him when you read her POV on the subject, I always thought that was a singular moment when she let her bitterness show because her guard was down, not representative of the way she usually treated Jon.

agreeing with you and ayrt. The statement Cat made to Jon while grieving for Bran was 100% unacceptable, but it's also the only time we see her say something like that and we basically have no evidence that she is habitually abusive towards him. She tolerates him and does her best in a situation which was basically thrust upon her without her consent.
