I'm sorry and that makes you hate ALL Americans why?

Also, who are you to completely deny someone their culture? Culture isn't just affected by the place you were born. It's also affected by your family and who is raising you. If your parents/grandparents/great-grandparents even, were from a different country and that culture affected the way you grew up, then you have at least some cultural aspects of that prior community. I understand feeling alienated or intruded upon when someone comes to your country and pretends to know all about it, but you can't just say "Oh hey, your grandparents decided to move to the US/Canada therefore YOU CAN'T BE IRISH/GERMAN/ITALIAN AT ALL ANYMORE."

Some historian or politician said (can't remember who!) said that the concept of America as a melting pot is deeply flawed. It's really more of a mixing bowl. (I like to think of it as a fruit salad, because I like fruit salad.) Yes all of these immigrants came, but they didn't completely wash away the traditions they left their home countries with. They brought that with them and formed their own communities and raised their children with values instilled by their cultures.

As an American, honestly, its things like this that are really hurtful. I understand, really I do, a lot of Americans are really ignorant. But then we get put in this little box altogether and I honestly start to hate myself a little bit. Which is an issue I have to work on, but I think others can work on it so by leaving behind the tired trope of "Oh God, fucking Americans, they're all so stupid and their customs have no basis in reality and fuck them." We have culture. We have feelings. A lot of us are educated and try to be conscious of the world around us.

Also, all nations are, in a way, imagined. (Check out "Imagined Communities" by Benedict Anderson, as mentioned in an earlier comment. Its actually a really interesting read.)

Reread the secret, and then look again at the comment your replied to.

Now seeing that the post I replied to was largely quoting the secret...whoops. Should have reread before commenting. I figured they were just restating, rather than citing the actual secret. :/

I think that still makes my points valid though, just also commenting on the original secret in conjunction with the comment. The thing that really got me was the "I hate Americans because They All do this."

Neither the secret nor the anon comment said they all did whatever objectionable thing, though, it just said they hated all of them because some did...

Because that's so much better. Also, how does the OP know the intricacies of someone's heritage or their full reasoning for being interested in genealogy? The OP's just hateful and that, frankly, is far more offensive than someone wanting to strike up a connection with another country.

Troll is trolling.

This comment was meant to go to the comment *you* replied to and not you, by the way.

Ha, at first I was like o.o I'm not a troll...

But that makes more sense. And I know they're probably trolling I just like to debate and occasionally I think its psychologically necessary to get things off your chest by ranting anonymously on the internet...
