Ah, thanks!

Frankly, the only thing keeping me from buying a PS3 right now, or years ago, is the economic factor.

Out of all the newer generations, it sounds like the console I'd get the most use out of it, considering the kinds of things I like.

OP:

If you look at it like an investment, it's not a bad move. Just look around for other things you'd like to use it for, tips to avoid bricking the console (I hear it can happen with some upgrades?), safety tips if you get an online account, etc.

If there is interest-free monthly payments offer coming up in a store you can shop in, go for that!

Yes, I almost had to reformat my hdd in my PS3 from the update being corrupt. I don't remember what I did to fix it, but it involved swapping it out with a spare hdd I happened to have lying around. It was a nightmare. My advice is to always update by downloading the file manually to a usb stick. After that I never update through the wifi.
