Oh, as a Hetalia fanboy, I can clearly say that it's worse than you can ever imagine. Aside from the shipping wars, there are also flame wars based on race, religion, culture, and just about any country in existence.

For me, the only reason I stayed in the fandom is by disregarding the "comment-war-LJ-Tumblr sites entirely" (I actually don't know these sites even existed until two years ago. Being a Malaysian with poor internet connection does help, I think) and focusing on the fan-made material produced. Not only does this fandom has fan-art and fanfic, but also fan-music (my favorite kink) and fan-games (my other favorite kink) and both of these can be surprisingly good, if you know where to look.

TL.DR: Stay clear of the fandom itself, just focus on what they have created. That's how I made it till today.
