I think it's really easy to put someone's opinion down by telling them they take things too seriously. I've had that said to me a lot. Look at all those dreadful puerile Hollywood films that exist by getting cheap laughs out of bigotry and misogyny. I don't see them often, but if I do and complain about the bigotry, I'm told I take it too seriously. I think it's because people feel threatened when they realise they are laughing at jokes based on prejudice.

Don't change, because you are right and they are wrong, even if they continue to think otherwise.
