I think every single person I know who likes the song, myself included, likes it BECAUSE of the self-awareness. It actually highlights how needy/whiny/douchy most break up songs are. The rebuttal is the best part of the whole thing, and, idk, I actually find that it makes the guy more sympathetic too. Yes, he's a whiny douche, but it goes from only being his voice to him being part of a messy breakup. It's humanizing, and it feels like seeing the whole picture.

Not everyone likes the song, and that's fine. No one HAS to like the song. You don't either. And I'm sure there are some people who don't get it. So? What if they don't? There are always people who don't. It doesn't make their enjoyment less, it doesn't make the song worse, and it doesn't obligate you to be the music police.
