True, but to be fair, those men are usually portrayed quite obviously as screwed up and unhealthy for anyone to try to emulate. And they usually get some sort of comeuppance once in a while (i.e., Leonard guilting Penny into apologizing to Howard for telling him off before the Robot Wars - ugh, how I hated HER being made to feel like she'd done something wrong - but then she got to punch him in the face for being creepy again and totally got away with it).

(Do you think maybe Raj is being sort of groomed to take Howard's place as the group's totally-fucked-up-about-women placeholder? Especially since he's got that muteism thing going on anyway around them one-on-one.)

To your first point I'd like that a lot better if most of his viewing audience could understand that. For example, most young guys I know think Barney (How I Met Your Mother) is 1,000% percent awesome and all the subtle character nuances fly right over their heads and they think he's being presented as a role model.

(That's what I meant! Perhaps I should have actually used his name?)

The problem is, as you probably know, like with any mirror of a segment of the population, the people who most need to see the ridiculousness of the character will likely be blind to it being ridiculous if it's not skull-crushingly obvious ... which would ruin any subtle humor if it was more exaggerated than it already is. And then we might just as well watch the Three Stooges (which I also like, but it's not the same humor). I think Howard's and Barney's writers and actors do a lot to portray them as kind of undesirable; problem is, they're also main protagonists or chief supporting, so they can't be entirely repulsive. It's like how you had to understand Karen Walker was a horrible woman, but for Megan Mullally to keep the job, she had to make her kind of lovable, too.

Plus - and let's face it - there are a lot of fanboys who revel in their own jerkiness and SEE the TBBT's guys' flaws as flaws, and just don't care or take pride in it in themselves. They're not going to change their behavior anyway - like the wannabe playboys who see Barney as a role model. They'd be assholes even without help; it's the rest of us who get to laugh at their caricatures, at least.

I get everything you're saying I just see a lot of my brother's younger friends who just don't have the ability to see any of that and then they run around acting like that and it's so frickin' frustrating.

Well yes, boys will be boys. Which, I've always thought is less about accepting them being jerks and more about acknowledging it's illegal to kill them. :-D
