Re: same anon!
(Anonymous) 2012-06-25 12:50 am (UTC)(link)Some websites use little program-like things called "scripts" to... well, to do stuff (like, for example, loading comments on a blog, loading advertisements, allowing you to submit comments, letting you vote on polls, allow you to use menus to navigate a website, show you videos, etc.).
But some websites use scripts to spy on what you do: what websites you visit, what you click on, what search terms you use on google, etc., and many people -myself included- find that to be an invasion of privacy.
So, you install NoScript, and when you click on its icon, you see a list of websites that have scripts on the current internet page you're visiting. You can check the reputation of each website, and allow only the websites you are okay with.
Of course, some are kind of dicks and there are websites you can't get to work properly if you don't allow certain websites (in my case, fanfiction.net started including a script from a site with a bad reputation, like a week ago, that you must allow or you can't log in, review, etc. -- yes, that complaining anon was me! :D --, so I was all "well, screw you fanfiction.net - I'll just stop using you!"
I think you can also block ads this way, but I allow the ones that aren't all creepy stalkery, like Project Wonderful, and Google (although I suspect that there is some level of Evil Corporation Shenanigans going on there, but I felt guilty for not allowing many ads) and some others I can't remember off the top of my head.
So, um.... yes. I hope this made sense and wasn't too tl;dr?

I totally spread the word on ff.net. *sigh* I don't want any of my friends to get a virus from there like I did.
