"supposed to incorporate more Norse elements than the first"

Oooh really is this so?

Yeah I was so unsure about Thor that I didn't watch it (plus annoying fans on my twitter feed), then I saw the Avengers cos of Whedon, and got over my stupid reservations in like 5 seconds flat.

Anyway, thinking about it, in oral traditions, stories mutate like anything (there's much less of a concept of absolute truth), and then the myths were worked over in the written tradition, so it's not like we've got The Exact Received Truth or anything. We make our own new myths these days!

From Hemsworth himself: "I think the science fiction element to THOR… the danger is it falls a little bit into the world of it’s “tough to throw a light to.” I think of big waterfalls and mountains and a Viking influence, where the Norse mythology kind of grew from. Having that in Asgard is going to make it all the more special and that’s what [director] Alan wants to bring to it."
