I have problems with how "top" and "bottom" are used both by fangirls and many gay men to mean "dominant" and "submissive", as in the traditional way penetration/penises are seen in het relationships. Tops/penetrators are naturally alpha/aggressive/pushy/masculine, riiiight? Kinda heteronormative.

But I'm not suggesting the terminology comes from fandom. And I find the terminology more problematic amongst het fangirls.

You do know these terms, "top" and "bottom," exist outside of the internet, right? And they often have little to do with dominance and submission and more with -- brace yourself -- simply whether you want to be fucked or whether you want to fuck someone?

AYRT LOL, my point is that those terms do exist outside of the internet, and yes, I do think that there is some heteronormativity currently present in gay male culture (and lesbian culture, to a lesser extent). Nor did I state that top was always conflated with dominant, even amongst hets, though there is a huge prevalence of this, yes.
