Holmes was also a drug-addict

Sort of.
First off, the drugs he did were legal at the time. Second, he only used them when he wasn't on a case. It's also implied he got off them at some point.

So interpreting the character as secretly in love with Watson is just as valid as interpreting the character as asexual.

Hee... the last bit wauwy's comment was making fun of a secret a few days back where someone insisted Holmes being asexual is canon (it's not), so fanficcers writing him having sex were terrible people who were trying to erase his asexuality.

It's irrelevant that they were legal, and Watson says quite clearly that:

"For years I had gradually weaned him from that drug mania which had threatened once to check his remarkable career. Now I knew that under ordinary conditions he no longer craved for this artificial stimulus, but I was well aware that the fiend was not dead but sleeping, and I have known that the sleep was a light one and the waking near when in periods of idleness I have seen the drawn look upon Holmes’s ascetic face, and the brooding of his deep-set and inscrutable eyes" (The Missing Three Quarter)

Holmes was an addict.
