Her favourites are Batman and Spider-Man, but I don't think she's picky about what she reads. She seems interested in Thor too.

For Batman, I'd suggest The Long Halloween and The Killing Joke, since they were big influences for the Nolan movies, and Batman: Year One, because it is just awesome. Also, Batwoman:Elegy is one of my favorite comics of all time, and if she enjoyed the Nolan movies she might like it as well as it has a realistic tone.

If she happens to like figurative or occult stuff, Arkham Asylum: A Serious House On Serious Earth is brilliant.

This is one of the most overrated comics of all time, imo. It's kind of just a pseudo-intellectual attempt to illustrate Batman's psychology, and it adds nothing to the Batman canon. My opinion on it anyways.

Yeah, I probably adore it because I don't follow the Batman canon much - I just read the odd thing here or there. Its appeal is probably more related to whether you like figurative content than whether you like Batman canon, though I am sure it helps if you happen to like both.

Walt Simonson's run on Thor = unbelievable awesomeness.

Batman...people's opinions on Batman are ridiculously varied, so what I like may not be what she likes, but...The Killing Joke and Batman: Year One are both amazing, although they're kind only semi-canonical (for the pre-reboot DC universe, that is).

Spider-Man...hmmm...The Death of Jean DeWolff was the first multi-issue Spider-Man story I ever read in its entirety, and I loved that.

My biggest warning -- whatever you do, stay the hell away from anything Marvel has put out in the past 7 or 8 years apart from Deadpool. It can be literally soul-destroying.

For other not-too-specific superhero comics in general...I'll just list some of my favorite things off the top of my head that I don't think are too influenced by my personal preferences:

for Marvel; Kurt Busiek's run on the Avengers, The Infinity Gauntlet, Avengers Forever, The Kree/Skrull War, Under Siege, John Byrne's run on the Fantastic Four, The Dark Phoenix Saga, almost everything Chris Claremont wrote for the X-Men

for DC; Grant Morrison's run on JLA, Gail Simone's run on Wonder Woman, The Judas Contract (actually, make that the whole Wolfman/Perez run on the Titans), JLA/Titans: The Technis Imperative, 52, JLA: Year One, Crisis On Infinite Earths

There's also JLA/Avengers, which is confusing as fuck to anyone who isn't deeply familiar with both teams, but if she's not put off by boatloads of baffling continuity, it will only make her want to read more of both JLA and the Avengers because it is just that awesome.

Seconding your recommendations. For DC I'd also add both Gail Simone's, as well as Chuck Dixon's earlier run on Birds of Prey. Definitely the series that kickstarted my interest in comics.

I think a really great starting place for getting into Batman comics is the Hush series; it's not the best Bat series ever written, but it's great introduction to the Bat-family/Batman comic-verse, and it's an entertaining read.
