But in any case, I think if anyone tells you that you just shouldn't bother writing, they're probably not someone you should listen too closely to. Try not to worry too much about flames, because while they're painful, I find they're often dishonest in a similar way that exaggerated, unabashed praise can be dishonest. Someone who tells you your story is the best thing ever is probably exaggerating, but there's also probably something about your fic that's genuinely good in order to get that sort of reaction. If someone tells you you're the worst writer ever and that your fic is garbage, then it's likely your story does have flaws, but they're still exaggerating.
If you really want to improve, focus on the feedback that seems more moderate and honest. Better yet, think about trying to find a beta down the road.
It might help, too, if you don't look at every story as something that you have to prove yourself with. I'm the sort of person who has to post just about everything I write, just for completeness sake, but there are definitely some things I'm not as crazy about and that I haven't made much effort to promote or put out there for people to see. It's there if someone wants to give it a chance, though.
Good luck!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)Sorry about getting out of topic here, but I just left a review exactly like that to a fic which in my view it WAS the best fic I've ever read, and now I'm a little bit worried the author might have thought I was exaggerating. :(

I also don't think there's anything inaccurate about saying that a fic is the best that you've read, because obviously that's a matter of experience and opinion and no one can tell you you're wrong.
But extremely positive reactions are often about how much the reader enjoyed the fic, which isn't always objective.
From a reader feedback angle, there's nothing wrong with being enthusiastic about liking something. I'm talking more about looking for concrit and trying to improve as a writer, in which case more objective feedback can be valuable.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 03:26 am (UTC)(link)Well, that makes me feel better... while I did get carried away in my enthusiasm, I always like to point out why I enjoyed a story... thank you for your thoughts on the matter. :)

But even if you didn't mention specifics, I wouldn't feel bad about that. I don't think it'd make your comment less nice to receive, or any less genuine.
