Yeah, obviously with hindsight that's the reason, but I know when I was watching the film that I'd missed the hints that Peter was alive ("Father"? Most computers in the Alien series get parental references at some point...) and thought Vickers was going to turn out to be male or trans or something, which was why she was so skittish about having sex with Janek.

Yeah, I was watching the wrong movie for a while.

Also, Shaw ripping herself open screamed abortion politics.

Heh, well, not so obviously because people are either missing it or handwaving it completely to go with trans!Vickers (which is a cool bit of character interpretation if you want to go that way, I just really doubt that's what the filmmakers were going for).

I think it's a cool bit of headcanon, too, and actually cuts down on the abortion politics because a) the child is shown alive; and b) Shaw CLEARLY wants the squidbaby out.

The whole woe-is-me-I'm-infertile-holy-crap-alien-tentacle-fetus "subplot" (if something that could easily be a major character arc but got compressed to 10 minutes can be called a subplot) squicked me the hell out, and not in the way that I think the scriptwriters intended. Then again, they also didn't understand that there's no such thing as free oxygen on a lifeless planet, or that presenting Egyptian, Ugaritic, and Babylonian artifacts and then claiming "these cultures had no contact with each other" is laughable, so there's that.

Having said that, it really did end up being a Cesarian rather than an abortion in the usual sense, as Shaw Jr. clearly survived the operation.
