I like Riley - he was never a favorite, but I like him well enough. I was into Buffy when I had no access to a computer, but awhile back - on a whim - I checked out the fandom and was pretty surprised by how much hate there was for him.

It's just...Riley was a rebound guy. He had his good points and bad points, but I don't think he and Buffy would have worked at all long term.

For Riley:
1) He never adjusted to the Scoobies way of fighting. Sort of the normal equivalent of a husband and wife disagreeing on how to run a business.

2) He had trouble with his girlfriend being physically stronger than him. Riley was never a douchebag about it, but it was obvious it really bothered him.

For Buffy:
1) Riley is the sort of guy who hides things until he no longer can. Buffy is a little too self-absorbed to notice most of the warning signs and force him talk about what is bothering him.

2) She does not compromise very well. Some of that is needed in a relationship with most people (including Riley).

Oh, I see. You have some very good points, anon. I watched Buffy when I was quite young, so a lot of that would have gone over my head. I should re-watch!

I agree that their relationship wouldn't have worked long term, with these points in mind. Riley was a nice guy, he just wasn't right for Buffy.
