Abuse can be a lot more subtle than someone being physically or mentally abusive 24/7.

Sometimes the abuser has their moments of kindness, and - surprising to most - you can love someone and still be abusive to them. Even if Gothel loved it, that doesn't mean it was healthy, or that what she did was right either.

That too. Seriously, "love" is a very broad word that can include all sorts of possessiveness and dependency, and just because someone says or even believes that s/he loves someone else does not in any way mean that s/he can't be very abusive.

Oh yes, I agree that Gothel was very abusive, but I also believe she loved Rapunzel too. You can love someone and still be abusive to them.

And this is perhaps the most horrifying aspect of it all. Society says that people who love you aren't supposed to hurt you (beyond misunderstandings, and the "romantic relationship went wrong and broke your heart" aspect of love that you see so much in media, of course, I mean more like familial love), so clearly, if your parent/sibling/uncle/aunt/etc. loves you, which you know they do, then they can't be hurting you, right? :(

I realize that abusers can also love their victims in their own way, but I honestly don't think Gothel truly loved Rapunzel. Held some affection for her? Maybe. But I think her actions make it pretty obvious that she doesn't love Rapunzel (the way she hugs Rapunzel's hair, nicknames her Flower, stabs her boyfriend and is perfectly willing to chain Rapunzel up in order to always have access to her magic hair seems to attest to this). It also seems clear that pretty much the only reason Gothel wanted to find Rapunzel after she ran away was because she needed her hair to stay young. I think the film would have been more interesting if it had shown Gothel struggling with her obsession with staying young while also realizing that she really did come to love Rapunzel and wanted to see her happy, but that didn't come across at all.

This. If there was even a second where Gothel seemed to show genuine remorse for what she was doing or concern for Rapunzel's well being instead of just her hair's, or maybe just a "Man, I'm kind of a bitch" moment, then I might buy the idea that Gothel actually loved Rapunzel.

I may not completely agree with this - but yeah. Sadly, people can - and I wouldn't be at all surprised if one of the things Repunzel told herself when Gothel was hurting her was 'She's my mom, so she must love me...And she's just doing this because she wants to help me'.

Then again, I could be projecting right here, so. : /

I have no doubts that my (very abusive) dad loved me. I don't think he knows how to not hurt people he loves; he's the product of an incredibly abusive environment himself. But all for knowing that logically, it doesn't make what he did any less horrible, particularly when he refuses to hear that he ever did anything wrong. It's not healthy, and I've seen too many people say "Well, they obviously love you so you should give them a chance" in regards to abusive family members or partners, etc. :-\
