I think that there is very little in canon to support that reading.

I think it's pretty obvious that Riley's issues stem from not being in the military any more and losing his sense of purpose and his OWN identity outside of being Buffy's Boyfriend.

Thank you! Yes, this exactly. People seem to forget that Riley didn't seem to have a problem with Buffy being stronger than him in S4 - in fact, it seems like he found it kind of a turn on. But Riley in S5 is in a bad place, and while I don't justify what he did, I still don't see how it's so much worse than the self-destructive behavior of some of the other characters during the course of the series.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who sees it this way. :)

Exactly! Once the Initiative arc was over and Riley had ditched the commando uniform, what was there for him? The only reason, I feel, that Riley even made it through the Initiative arc into Season Five was because he was Buffy's boyfriend, and he was struggling to find that purpose, that reason for him to be there. And then Buffy didn't even want him to be that, at least not full time - she was keeping him at arm's length during the medical crisis with her mother.

I mean, yeah, you want to say that he wanted her to be weak with him, I could see a read on that, in that he wanted her to feel like she could be weak with him, in the same way that Tara once told Willow that she could let down her walls in their bedroom. Not that he wanted her weak so that she'd depend on him, but that she would let him actually BE her boyfriend, be someone she loved, who she'd let in behind those barriers.
