Do you expect to be amazing right off the bat? The only reason good writers are good is practice and crit and continuing to write. Don't give up because of that! Find what people like in your writing and expand on that. Even if they find something wrong with it, it's how you learn what works best!

One person liked your stuff and that's more than a lot of people can say. Work toward making it more, and be proud of that!

Nope, it's because I am a good and seasoned writer of my own fiction. I even have published a book. I just found out that I may not be so good writing fanfiction! So of course it was a reality check to me.

That's the funny thing about fanfiction. If you don't get the atmosphere, characterization and various fan favorites, you can write phenomenally and still receive no accolades from the fans, but if you get all those right and write moderately good or even badly, and still find someone who'll like it, because on average fans aren't discerning readers, they're just there to satiate their fandom cravings.

Aww, well writing for established characters is a little different. I have a friend who mostly writes original characters too, and found it hard to write fandom at first. I've seen her improve over time, so I do think that it's possible. Don't beat yourself up, you at least are published! :(

Oh, I hear you, anon! I think I'm a pretty decent original fic writer - but I am shit at writing fanfic. My character voices never seem to ~quite~ match up with the majority of fans, and it also cuts out my favorite part of writing - world & character building. It's just not for everyone!
