Make an account with a different handle from your usual one and don't leave any information that can be traced to you. Then, when you upload it, it'll be perfectly anonymous... and you can find out whether people enjoy it or not without tarnishing your reputation.

If you're honestly only worried about your quality of writing, I wouldn't go by people's opinion of it online, especially at a place like FF. There are many people who will adore and praise fic that I honestly don't see as being that good, while more or less ignoring much better fics.

If anything, the reviews you get might only help you figure out what pairings are popular in a certain fandom, since shippy fics tend to get more readers and reviews than non-shippy fic, unless it's a tiny fandom, where almost any fic will get attention just because there are so few. xD;;

Please try it, secret-maker! And I honestly don't think it's impossible to improve, even if you just flat-out aren't any good. You could always keep trying and learn!

I'm gonna do the alternate handle route, and it is already a relief, so it might work for OP, too.

RE: ff.net feedback: Spot on. That only gauges the "hotness" of what you're writing in that fandom, nothing more.

You'll have a better time finding a beta reader with lots of patience and free time.

Consider joining good writing forums, like absolutewrite dot com or the CC section of Something Awful (you have to paid almost 10 USD for a membership, but you could just lurk and read what they say to other writers and learn from that).

I've done the alternate handle before myself and it helped me become more confident without the looming threat of thoroughly embarrassing myself! ^^

Oh, that sounds like good advice also.

In addition, there are certain fandom-specific communities on livejournal where you can share your fanfics too, so if any exist for your fandom, they might help get you more readers who are familiar with what you're writing!
