Yes! I love that he goes home and within a day has trashed his weapons manufacturing and then, when he finds out about Stane doing back-room deals he is *furious* and immediately fixes it. He really *is* a good guy, he just hasn't ever had to develop social skills.

(Or, more likely, he developed his more annoying tendencies to keep people off his back and keep his dad from totally demolishing him.)

My two cents? It's a coping method. Everyone wants something from him, and he just doesn't have the time, resources, or patience to deal with it. And since no one just wants to *be* around him, he's an asshole so they'll just tell him already and leave, instead of pretending to like him and breaking his heart when they finally get around to it.

Totally projecting my reasons for talking 'smart' around my classmates at an early age, though, so you never know. It's just, he graduated university before most people would be done high school. I can't imagine he had any choice besides doormat (similar to Bruce Banner's portrayal) or mouthy little brat that never takes anything lying down (closer to Steve Rogers).

Granted I also think he's the greatest thing Marvel ever created because he's an *engineer* and got his powers through doing everything right under pressure, as opposed to a random mistake.

This, exactly. Everyone knows who he is, knows his history, knows all about him - he can't, as the lady says, go from the cab to the curb without some little jerk on his back.

So he copes by keeping everyone at arm's length and being super-duper careful about letting anyone in. If he was a super-nice guy i'd be, frankly, astounded.

"Mouthy little brat" is probably my favorite character type ever, because it's basically what I always felt like, but didn't have the self-confidence to be (and therefore fell into the doormat persona instead). So honestly, mouthy little brats, if they have strong enough redeeming qualities like Tony, are pretty much wish-fulfillment for me ;)
