I'm going to try to explain this, but my best guess is that it's a troll.

The movie in general (including the Lorax, who's the little orange fluffball) doesn't really have much of a fandom. The Once-ler, who's the guy in the hat, does have a lot of fans, though. He has a bunch of quirky mannerisms and cute hobbies, some people think his character design is attractive, he's kind of a woobie (mommy issues! lifelong regret!), and he becomes very corrupt and wears a nice suit, which I think most people understand can be appealing to some fans.

Now, the Once-ler's fandom is... really weird. And I'm saying that as somebody who actually likes said fandom. There's very few options for who to ship him with, and a lot of the fans default to shipping corrupt Once-ler with relatively-nice Once-ler somehow. As people made a bunch of askblogs for him, some of the fans started to ship the askblogs. People do this with varying levels of seriousness. While there are many well-behaved Once-ler fans, there are quite a few loud obnoxious ones too, and the fandom in general has gotten a reputation for being oversensitive spoiled brats who are also totally incomprehensible.

I have not actually seen much Once-ler/Lorax, though maybe it exists and I'm just hanging around the side of the fandom that doesn't do that (I am glad for this). I'm guessing there are people who do genuinely ship it, but this is not the picture somebody would use if they were actually trying to express that opinion.

I think the first Once-ler/Lorax secret was probably genuine, and some of the people here were really grossed out and angry. Since then, it's been the go-to for jokes about awful ships. That's why it's likely to be a troll- because the OP assumes it'll 1) likely offend this comm and 2) with a bonus of possibly offending any bratty, oversensitive Once-ler fans around. It's mostly failed though because only a few anons react over here, and the Once-ler fans are mostly on tumblr and not here, so even the ones who'd take the bait don't really get to see it.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love some actual quality Once-ler fandom trolling. This isn't it, and it's just kind of annoying and embarrassing.

Well said. My boyfriend and I went to see The Lorax and both found The Onceler cute..
Neither of us is involved in the fandom, but I look at the fandom sometimes. It is the most entertaining thing ever.
