I can understand Tate apologists to an extent, given a narrow and specific motivation that they may or may not have, anyway... Tate was there, being mostly sympathetic for a very long time before he got revealed as the gimp. It might be a little hard to accept that development, for some people. I know that I thought from day one that the gimp was Zachary Quinto, and I was completely "WTF?" when it was revealed as Tate, of all people.

He stopped being sympathetic when it was revealed that he murdered a bunch of innocent teenagers, which was pretty early on.

He couldn't remember he'd done that. He was horrified by those murders, not understanding he'd committed them.
