THIS.

I don't even understand how anyone can think of him as a misogynistic douchebag. At worst, he was guilty of skewed priorities, in that he was wanting Buffy to put more attention to their relationship while her mother was sick, but even that was an evolution of the problems that were already in their relationship- she had already been shoving him away at the time. If she'd been coming to him for comfort and support during it, he wouldn't have started to go to the lengths he did.

Really, I'm at a loss to even explain the 'misogyny' part of that complaint either. On the contrary, he was decent and respectful and a genuine good guy. Some people actually ARE good people.

In The Initiative Riley realises he must like Buffy because he hits Parker for making a sexist comment about her ('You know the difference between a freshman girl and a toilet seat? A toilet seat doesn't follow you around after you use it'), even though according to Forrest he heard him (Forrest) say 'much grosser things than that' and didn't mind. Clearly for Riley sexist comments are a-okay when they aren't about women you happen to fancy.

Meh, you're likely to ignore someone you're depending on (which in a military situation like that they were) making those kind of remarks than some randomer who's being a jackass.

Not to say there wasn't a double standard, but I don't know if it's not more about the fact that it was Forrest saying it than fact that Buffy was involved, even if he agreed with Forrest's point at the time.

It's definitely about Buffy. When Forrest asks him why he hit Parker, he doesn't really know, but then comes up with the explanation that he didn't like him 'talk about Buffy that way'. From which he draws the conclusion that he apparently 'likes' her.

I used to like Riley, but then I rewatched Buffy, and suddenly that scene really stuck out for me, because in hindsight it's so very much in keeping with how their relationship ended.

I have to say, I really don't think it equals sexist comments being a-okay for a guy to not punch his friend for using them. We let a lot of stuff slide when it's our friends. It can be argued that Riley should have told Forrest to cut it out, but a) that doesn't mean Forrest would have, and b) him not doing so doesn't equate to agreement or even acceptance on his part.
