I've said many times that I was genuinely shocked that she died. As I was watching it I was sure it was going to end with Rapunzel going back to her parents and Gothel being banished or depowered or something, but Rapunzel would spare her because she realized that she did care for her, in her own fucked-up way, and was lonely and didn't have a real family or whatever. That just seemed more Disney, for one thing. Killing her was some DreamWorks shit. I guess I respect it, but it was surprising.

Disney's done a lot of villain deaths though, in cases where the one mistreated would have spared them or didn't mean to kill them. There's at least one where the protagonist was trying to save the villain when it happened. It was a little surprising that Pascal actually tripped her, but Rapunzel herself didn't mean for it to happen and I would have been more surprised if Gothel had lived. Given her dramatic aging without the flower and her spitefulness when defied, I don't think banishing her would have been much resolution. It'd set up questions of what's going to happen to her and if that's cruel in itself, and what she might try to do.

It's not like Rapunzel purposefully killed her though. In fact, when Gothel is starting to fall towards the window, Rapunzel reaches out her hands like she wanted to save her. I found that more than a little creepy and sad for Rapunzel.
