Huh. Maybe I need to see the movie again, but to me, she DID seem as though she sincerely loved Rapunzel, or at least believed she did -- the scene where she comes home to find Rapunzel missing really makes it seem like she's genuinely frightened for Rapunzel, not "omg now I'm gonna get old!". And just....a lot of other scenes with her, especially her songs.

I dunno, I just would expect a more calculating and cold approach if Gothel was mentally going "hmm...how do I get her to shut up about this Flynn so I can get her hair back". Instead, she seemed really shocked and angry and vicious and almost yandere-like at Rapunzel's perceived betrayal. I don't at all agree that she only cared about Rapunzel's hair. I think she did care about Rapunzel too...which IMO makes her even more of a horrible monster than she would be if she just saw Rapunzel as a walking fountain of youth.

It's possible, I honestly can't remember. I thought her surprise and fear and anger was a combination of "I'm gonna die terribly if anything happens to Rapunzel!" (considering how things went for her when Rapunzel's hair was cut, I suspect it would have ended the same if Rapunzel got killed) and "I was so kind to that ungrateful little twit - didn't even lock her in a cellar or anything - and she does me like this?!" That sort of thing. Any care she might have shown for Rapunzel was too subtle for me (forgot all the songs, lol), besides material comforts. I really need to see it again. But I agree it would have made her even more horrifying, to do that to someone you do care about.
