...Except it was abuse? There's a cycle a lot of abusers fall into - one where they do something hurtful to their victim, then they come back and apologize and be sweet...only to hurt them again. While that doesn't seem to be quite Gothel's style, it does prove the fact an abuser can, and does in most cases, have moments of sweetness - it's all apart of keeping their victim off balance and invested in the relationship.

In Gothel's case, it was a little more subtle than that. Did she, potentially , seem like she actually cared about Repunzel? Yes - but at the same time, it was to her benefit to look that way. If you actually listen to all the things she says in the beginning [when they're setting up the dynamic of the relationship], she's usually insulting Repunzal, then *after* it's obvious it scored a hit, playing it off like a joke. That's manipulative, and subtle - and it hurts. On that I can speak from experience - and it does make the victim question their own judgement, even more so when they trust their abuser - which it seems like Repunzel did at the beginning.

Was it *completely* realistic? No, not completely - Repunzel over came the years of abuse far too quickly, if nothing else, but it's close enough that it hits home for a lot of us who really did live through it.
