I agree with you, but I do feel I should defend Merida. For a character who is basically meant to be an iconic bow-wielder, girl is badass with a sword.

Agreed. Also, it's a universe where a female with a bow is very unusual apparently, and all the men suck when using one. So...

We only saw four people use a bow and arrow--Merida (who's great with it), and the three sons. The blue-painted one was actually quite good, and the others were just untrained and apparently sort of incompetent.

Also she doesn't really use her bow and arrows that much, just for uselessly shooting at the evil bear. That scene where she sword fights her father is the only scene where she gets to be 'badass'.
