Came to say this, and apparently [spoiler alert] Itachi is raised from the dead to have one last hurrah with Sasuke which is probably the scene OP is referring to.

I remember a time wehen Sasuke was my favorite character because of all his shades of grey. Then he killed a girl who was his ally and was held hostage by an enemy, so that he could show that enemy he didn't care about her, and I stopped caring about his ass. I also stopped reading the manga.

Well, to be fair, he didn't actually kill her, just tried to. But yeah, the fail that is Sasuke these days is amazing.

Uh, no. He didn't kill her, and while he's definitely been pushed into the deep end, I still consider him pretty morally ambiguous. A lot of characters are.

He mortally injured her. The fact that she didn't die doesn't change the fact that he aimed to kill her. His moral fucked-upness reached its red level for me when he speared her to get to the guy holding her in front of him like a shield. What kind of a low life a-hole kills a trapped, defenseless hostage, an ally no less, just to win a fight. The fact that the other guy thought holding the girl in front of him would somehow cause Sasuke to hesitate shows that even a random villain has a higher moral ground than the most popular character in the manga.

The kind who cares about revenge over all else and who is explicitly shown not to care about his allies? It's been some time since I touched Naruto, so I could be wrong, but I got the impression that Sasuke wasn't someone we were supposed to root for anymore, and that how badly he went off the deep end while pursuing revenge is exactly the focus of his character nowadays.
