In the manga Kaze Hikaru, Sei (undercover as a guy) pretended to have a bet with Soji and the winner got to have a three-day stay at a brothel every month- the same brothel where Sei's deceased older brother's lover (Akesato) worked. Akesato was able to hook Sei up with the feudal Japan equivalent of pads and tampons and gave her a bunch of black and dark red clothes she could wear so if something did happen it wouldn't stand out.

It was interesting, and done fairly realistically, although I'm not sure that the Shinsengumi would have just been "ok whatever" about part of their patrol buggering off for ostensibly to have sex for three days every month.
