I have to give props for Disney for Gothel, sure her characterization is still evil on the good/evil scale, but they choose it in a way that she wasn't stereotypical evil.

Gothel never, ever loved Rapunzel. She never show any affection to Rapunzel that didn't involved her hair. We are shown many times in the movie that Gothel was very willing to do anything for that hair? Go to a dangerous place in the deep woods by a cliff for a flower? Check. Willing to infiltrate a castle on an extremely dangerous mission to steal a princess which, getting caught, can send you to jail for the rest of your life? Check. Willing to mix it up with two extremely dangerous men to get the hair back? Check.

They also showed that Gothel was a stauch believer of attracting more bees with honey than vinegar. Do you think that it's better that she treated Rapunzel like shit? No. You want your perfect victim to depend on you and only you and want to please you in any way they can.

I think people who insist that Gothel loved Rapunzel are talking into more of their own issues and beliefs than what the movie portrayed. It's really hard for some people to disconnect a person's acts from their motivations, especially when we are taught that way.

To be, all the shit Gothel done doesn't mean anything outside of making Rapunzel complacent and want to please her for her hair.

If the moment that Gothel dropped all pretense of being a "fussy but good mom" to "the bad guy", that should be the final flag that she really didn't care about Rapunzel and willing to put her through serious danger to enslave her.
