Well yeah, if their basis for being in the fandom is that Japan is this OMG so wonderful magical happy place where all their problems will be solved, then yes, they will grow out of it when they realize it's not. But if you're genuinely interested in Japanese culture and media, it's not something that is in any way age-dependent.
